I didn’t think it would happen so quickly. My iMac isn’t even 2 years old — but it did. First, there was a helicopter like sound. I should have taken it as a warning sign. Instead I kept working, it was much fainter than before when I lost a PC to the same affliction. Then it began to bog down, and finally last night — the dreaded gray screen of death.
It’s OK, I have an external hard drive. My work is safe. I may not be able to process photos or send in orders for a few days while a new hard drive is on the way, but at least I will still have photos to process when it comes in.
Yes, I’m being dramatic, but let this be a lesson. Murphy’s Law is always lurking. Please, please, please — if you opt for digital negatives instead of prints, especially for your wedding, make multiple copies of your photos and store them in more than one location. Even better, order prints. Who knows if USB, BluRay or even HDTV will be around in 20 years. But, you most likely will be and your photos will be even more important to you then. Make sure you have them around, who knows, you may become famous. People will want to see you as the strapping young lad or lass you were before.
