I Built My Own PC, and It Works.

Building your own PC

A month ago I’d never seen the inside of a computer before.  Problems with my iMac changed that.  It wasn’t capable of doing the job I needed it to do anymore.

iMacs are great, but versions fast enough to handle photo processing are special order only, pricy and difficult to open up to repair.  Buying a new one was to be the last resort.

PCs for specialized work aren’t any less expensive pre-built and what I wanted wasn’t available.

So, despite a love for Mac OS, building a PC myself was the best fit.

Do not try this unless you enjoy days of research, reading product manuals and solving puzzles.

There are so many choices when it comes to computer parts, it’s likely that you’ll end up putting something together that won’t turn on.

After an entire day spent piecing it together, having it power on without exchanging a part may have been lucky.

I’m no expert, but here’s my build for those who are considering this route:

Good Things Can Just Happen

Bad things happen to good people but good things often go unnoticed.

I’d been seeking a logo for some time, and just wasn’t satisfied.

I took a crack at it, I hired people to work on it, and we all made some wonderful work. None of it fit.

So I let go of the idea that I’d find the logo that went with everything.

Then I got a letter from a graduate student in Canada asking to use some of my work for her final portfolio in graphic design.

On a whim, I gave her the choice of paying me or making me a logo after her school work was done.

She took option B and I didn’t think much else of it.

Several months later some designs came in my inbox and I learned the student was now a professional.

She had landed a job at an ad agency that represents industry leaders who are worldwide household names.

Even if I became the most famous photographer in the world, I probably still couldn’t afford them.

It’s pretty awesome to get work of that caliber as a trade.

It’s also a great feeling to get something better than expected — especially when getting it makes you

even the tiniest piece on the path to someone’s success.
